By hand...

Evan and I sat down with needle and thread to embroider. We are finally getting some rain and find ourselves indoors. I had some aida cloth. He chose the colors, I thread the blunt needle, made a knot to keep it together for him. Then he set to work. I would finish the last stitch and fasten it for him. Before beginning another color.
Such a look of concentration. It was a amazing to watch him at work. He would turn his work back and forth making sure to have the needle enter on the right side as the thread so that it did not get wrapped the wrong way.

This was his final product. Jackson Pollack with thread:) I think I will try drawing a little truck for him to try next time. Evan is all about wheels:)

I finished Evan's playmat. It was my first real quilting project. I wanted it to reflect the world he knows. So there are hills, lakes, rivers, dirt roads, trees and farms. It was a lot of fun to make!

You are one busy woman! Love E's version of Jackson Pollack. May fetch a nice price someday. Frame it. :)

The quilt is beautiful!

And Evan's piece ... can I just say Wow!?

ABC has been doing a series of programs on unschooling, and unfortunately, the reporter is a bit biased against unschooling, and it shows. What's funny is in their most recent piece, they featured a family in NH, and the eleven year old boy, who's never been to school and couldn't (or wouldn't) recite his times tables when prompted by the reporter was making bread, by hand, from scratch. Maybe the boy doesn't know off the top of his head what 8x8 is, but how many eleven year old boys (or boys of any age, for that matter) can bake a loaf of bread?

Sorry about the long-windedness. Evan's embroidery project just reminded me of that family :). If he embroiders a truck, I imagine it will be pretty remarkable.

I love the play mat! And what FOCUS that little guy has!!!! Excellent that I boy is getting to do this! King Edward VIII and King George VI of Britain [brothers] were both taught to do needlework and continued throughout their lives!

I think the Pollack piece is fantastic, color, skill, courage, all in one hoop.
