I look to see if the peas have plumped in their pods.  I count the little yellow flowers forming on the tomato plants. I harvest herbs before their oils are diminished in the heat of the day. For about, just under a year we have been purchasing many of our hardware needs from The Farmington Farmers Union. It is a local hardware, farm supply store. I live in a state, Maine, where the amount of food that is produced in this state will feed 40% of its population. Ideally it would be great if we could have that number grow. But it is pretty good.I can buy locally grown and milled wheat, locally grown and processed canola oil. I can buy mustard milled at a mustard mill in Eastport, Maine. Technically, our home is in the foothills of the western Maine Mountains; which, in practical terms, means we are close to the state's skiing region and great hiking.
